The New York Butoh Festival offers 8 Butoh training sessions as part of the the NY Butoh-Kan Training Initiative Program.

- Workshops sessions are open to all; no previous dance training is necessary.
- Maximum per class: 24 students.Workshop spaces fill up fast, so register soon!

- An Introductory session is an 8 to 12 hour training session. / An Intensive session is a 32 to 40 hour training session. Material for each session is different. You DO NOT need to take and introductory session in order to take an intensive session.
- A deposit of $100 for each introductory session or of $200 for each intensive session or of $500 for the Special Training Pass is due with your application.

A physically charged workshop drawing upon techniques from Butoh, Noguchi Gymnastics and Tai-Chi. Concentration on the center of the body (tanden) is the focus.
YUKO KASEKI is a freelance dancer, choreographer and teacher in Berlin. Kaseki has developed her own rich choreographic vocabulary that is rhythmic and elegant.

This sessions will focus on the exploration of breath + pliancy. Students are guided through various exercises, including: techniques for relaxation and breath control, sensory exploration, transformation exercises, image-based improvisations, and exploring basic moments of “crisis” such as sleeping, walking and falling.
KO MUROBUSHI trained and performed with butoh’s creator Tatsumi Hijikata and was a founding member of Dairakudakan, the largest and longest-running Butoh company. His influential group, Ariadone, introduced Europe to Butoh in 1978. Based in Japan, he tours internationally throughout Europe and South America.

This workshops will deepen students’ bodily awareness through sensory exercises and approaches to increasing expression. In addition to basic physical training and breath, the foundations of Butoh are explored through walking, imagery and improvisations centered on the body’s transformations. Daisuke Yoshimoto has collaborated with the great artists of Butoh such as Kazuo Ohno, Hisayo Iwaki and Yukihiko Sakai. Primarily a solo artist, over the past twenty years he has carved out his own unique and theatrical style. Based in Tokyo, he tours and teaches workshops internationally.

Mari Osanai was born in Aomori, Japan; trained in Classical Ballet, Noguchi Gymnastics, Yoga, Tai Chi and Hip Hop. Her unique movements are realized through interweaving these diverse techniques. The philosophy and practice of Noguchi Gymnastics has had a strong influence on her creations. She has performed in Japan, Canada and the USA.
